Scarlett was an orphan on the streets when the Vampire Lord Sean took her in as his thrall and his lover and swore a blood oath to protect her. Then Chelsea arrives and takes him. Sean turns Chelsea into a vampire, lets her drink from Scarlett as well, and is distracted enough to miss the night of the oath entirely, which leaves Scarlett dying.
