Five years ago Evelyn, a girl from the slums, was chosen by Adrian, a wealthy young man from New York, to be a surrogate and bear his daughter Chloe. After the birth she was stripped of any claim to the child and kept on at Blackwood Estate as a live in nanny, quietly memorising Chloe's every habit and fear while the nominal wife Lillian humiliated her, made her kneel and kept her at arm's length.
