Rita spends a snowy Thanksgiving with her ungrateful uncle William and his cruel family, who use her powers, wreck her feast and then arrange for her to be driven off for good. Hunted and alone, she is found by the mafia godfather Richard Genovese and his wife, who have no heir and know kindness when they see it, and they adopt her. Her powers pull them through crisis after crisis on the road, which does not go unnoticed by Richard's rival, and at the manor she heals his dying father Arthur.
