The story
She crossed an ocean for a man who betrayed her.
It is 1911, and Evelyn Hart, a rural English schoolteacher, crosses the ocean to New York's Gilded Age to marry Thomas, who has other plans for her. On the liner she saves a wounded stranger named Julian Kane, and with nowhere else to go she agrees to marry him for convenience. She has no idea he is heir to an empire of railways, shipping and steel. What starts as a reclusive tycoon keeping his name to himself turns into something tender, while her old rival keeps sniping and the truth of who he is works its way to the surface.
