Lara is a thief, and the ring she steals carries a curse that binds her to a Death God who has lost his memory. What he has forgotten is her. Lara is the love he lost, born again. Breaking the curse costs him everything. He gives up being a god to become mortal, and Lara is the one who holds his soul here on earth.
