Eleanor was a devoted wife and mother, and this time she can see exactly where William's affection goes and always went. Between his bigamy and her children's cruelty there is nothing worth staying for, so she leaves and quietly applies to Harvard. She builds a life in science while the four of them live with Lydia, and by the time they understand what they threw away and come asking, Eleanor is not interested in taking any of it back.
